Walking through the aisles of a supermarket in Palermo, Caballito or Belgrano today offers a different visual landscape than a year ago. Those gaps on the shelves or the monotony of local brands are being replaced by a «boom» of imported products that promise to shake the pockets and palates of Buenos Aires residents.
After the relaxation of customs procedures and the deregulation of foreign trade, 2026 began with an invasion of foreign products that not only bring variety, but also unexpected price competition.
The return of the classics and new bets
One of the milestones most celebrated by consumers is the return of Conaprole. The Uruguayan dairy cooperative, which used to be a staple in Argentine refrigerators before the restrictions, returned with everything: butter, cream cheese and its already famous dulce de leche are once again fighting in the dairy sector.
But it’s not the only thing. Coffee lovers also have reasons to celebrate. Renowned Italian brands such as Lavazza y Viaggio They regained ground, competing with capsules and coffee beans of European origin that had disappeared or were available at prohibitive prices.
In the beverage sector, imported beers are gaining space. From the Brazilian Itaipava even the Spanish Landvikthe premium and massive offer is diversified, offering alternatives for the after-office ritual or meeting with friends.
Cheaper than national?
The fact that most surprises the residents of CABA is the impact on the final ticket. According to market surveys, the price gap is notable:
- Preserves and Warehouse: Cans of tuna from Ecuador (brands such as Bulnez or Máxima) are available at significantly lower prices than the leading local brands.
- Saving: In categories such as coffee, dairy products and preserves, some imported products are located between a 15% and 30% below of the price of the national industry.
Fruits, vegetables and even meat “from abroad”
The opening also reached the greengrocers and the Central Market. Today it is possible to find oranges and tangerines from Spainapples Chile and the inevitable bananas Ecuador.
Even the most sacred item on the Argentine table, the carnerecords changes. In the last year, beef imports grew by 580%, coming mainly from Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Although it still represents a smaller percentage of total consumption, its presence in the refrigerators of Buenos Aires supermarkets is beginning to be a daily reality.
Historical record
According to data from CEPA (Center for Argentine Political Economy), imports of consumer goods reached a historic peak in 2025/2026, surpassing records from 2018. In food alone, the increase was 77,4% compared to the previous year.
For the Government, this competition is the key to stopping food inflation. For the Buenos Aires consumer, it is the opportunity to once again choose international brands and, in the process, take care of their monthly budget a little more.
