Tension and arrests in Congress due to a Greenpeace protest against the Glacier Law

With toilets installed at the entrance and posters with a strong message «Senators: don’t shit in the water»environmentalists denounced that the reform proposed by the Government puts the country’s strategic freshwater reserves at risk. According to the organization, the change in regulations would allow the advancement of mega-mining in areas that are currently protected.

The protest ended with incidents when members of the Federal Police intervened to clear the steps. At least 12 activists were arrested. The tension escalated when the police force also attacked press workers who were covering the event; An A24 cameraman was hit and delayed while doing his job.

Greenpeace was again in Congress with a 50-meter-long banner that carried the message “Water is a right, not a business.” The organization has warned on several occasions about the imminent risk to Argentina’s largest freshwater reserves and demands that these ecosystems be protected from extractive projects.

What is being voted on today? The Senate debates the reform of the Glacier Law (which already has half the approval of Deputies). The point of greatest conflict is the redefinition of the «periglacial environment», which for geological and environmental experts opens the door for the provinces to relax environmental controls to favor extractive investments.
