La Perla: 12 missing victims recovered their identity

A new and important advance in the identification of people who disappeared during the last civil-military dictatorship was confirmed in the last hours. The Federal Justice of Córdoba, with the fundamental work of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF)managed to identify the remains of 12 personas who had been clandestinely buried in the vicinity of the former “La Perla” Clandestine Detention Center.

The discovery in the La Calera Military Garrison

The skeletal remains were recovered on property belonging to the Military Garrison of La Caleraan area operationally linked to the operation of «La Perla», one of the largest extermination centers in the interior of the country.

According to judicial sources and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, these identifications are the result of a meticulous process of excavations and DNA analysis that required years of field and laboratory work. The discovery allows us to reconstruct part of the horror that occurred in the Mediterranean province and finally provides an answer to the families who searched for their loved ones for decades.

The role of the EAAF and Justice

The confirmation came through Federal Court No. 3 of Córdoba. The identification process allowed the genetic profiles of the remains found to be crossed with the blood samples provided by relatives in the National Genetic Data Bank.

Although in some cases these are partial identifications due to the state of the remains, the legal and reparatory value is immense. This advance adds to the evidence collected in the mega-cases that have already convicted those responsible for crimes against humanity in the region, such as former general Luciano Benjamín Menéndez.

Memory, Truth and Justice

This finding reinforces the importance of continuing with Human Rights policies and the financing of scientific teams working in the search for the missing. For the community, and especially for Human Rights organizations, each identification represents an act of sovereignty over memory and one more step towards closing wounds that still remain open in Argentine society.
