The moment of takeoff
The launch is scheduled to take place from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The window of opportunity opens at 19:24 (Argentina time) / 00:24 on April 2 (Spain time). The powerful rocket SLS (Space Launch System) will be in charge of propelling the ship Orion into deep space.
A crew for history
Four astronauts will travel on board, representing a milestone in the diversity of space exploration:
- Reid Wiseman (Commander): He will lead the 10-day mission.
- Victor Glover (Piloto): He will become the first person of color to travel to the Moon.
- Christina Koch (Specialist): She will be the first woman to participate in a lunar mission.
- Jeremy Hansen (Specialist): Representative of the Canadian Space Agency and first non-American to leave low Earth orbit.
The objective of the mission
Although on this occasion there will not be a moon landing (that will be left for the future Artemis III mission), the Artemis II crew will perform a lunar flyby. During the 10-day journey, the life support, navigation and communication systems of the Orion spacecraft will be tested, reaching a distance of more than 7,000 kilometers beyond the far side of the Moon.
The Argentine contribution: The Atenea satellite makes history
One of the most exciting facts for our country is that the mission does not travel alone. He also travels on the giant SLS rocket Athenaa microsatellite developed entirely in Argentina.
- National landmark: This is a development of the CONAE in conjunction with public universities (such as UNLP, UNSAM y FUCK) and the company PREVENT.
- Critical mission: Once the Orion spacecraft detaches, the Atenea will be deployed to test Argentine technology in deep space, facing extreme radiation levels.
- Space record: With this launch, the Atenea will become the object manufactured in Argentina that The furthest it has come from Earthoperating more than 70,000 kilometers away.
