The political map of Latin America is creaking again. In a second electoral round with record participation – which jumped from the usual 57% to a historic 63.4% – Colombia was divided exactly into two halves. The official pre-count gave a millimeter advantage to the lawyer and outsider Abelardo de la Espriella, representative of the Defenders of the Homeland movement, who reached 49.6% (almost 13 million votes). His rival, the philosopher and human rights defender Iván Cepeda, stood at 48.7%, being just 250,000 votes away. The parity is so extreme that Gustavo Petro’s ruling party has already announced the challenge of 33,000 tables, stretching the definition to the final scrutiny.
Thank you, Colombia!
Almost 13 million Colombians placed their trust in José Manuel Restrepo, in Tigre and in this great dream called Patria Milagro.
This historic support fills us with gratitude, but also with enormous responsibility. Today a new stage begins… pic.twitter.com/137k5Q6wzo

The rise of De la Espriella, nicknamed «El Tigre», marks a drastic turn for the country. With a platform based on the criminal «hard hand» – explicitly inspired by Nayib Bukele’s model in El Salvador – and a plan of strong fiscal adjustment and economic deregulation in line with the style of Javier Milei, the elected president promises to dismantle the social reforms of the outgoing government. In fact, Milei did not take long to celebrate on social networks under the slogan «The lion and the tiger roar in Latin America!»added to the immediate congratulations of the North American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, representing the Donald Trump administration, who sees in Bogotá the return of a key ally in the region.
The triumph of the Colombian extreme right capitalized on the strong anti-Petro vote in the middle and upper classes and in the agrarian areas hardest hit by the armed conflict, completely diluting the political center. However, social governance appears to be a scenario of high tension: Cepeda has already warned that his parliamentary and social force will resist in the streets any attempt to cut historical achievements such as the living wage, the pension bonus or the public education budget. Whoever wins the official scrutiny, Colombia dawns governed by the mutual distrust of two irreconcilable halves.
