«Something unprecedented»: the story of the Carroll couple
The details of the history of this long-standing marriage they met thanks to a Facebook post by John Carroll, one of his grandsons.

The couple married in April 1946, just a few months after the end of World War II, in which John participated. «Eighty years later, their love is still intact,» his grandson wrote.
According to the post, the then young people did not imagine that their commitment would last so many years. «They had no idea that their marriage would last eight decades, through cultural revolutions, technological transformations and generations of family. Their story remains something practically unprecedented in modern America,» said John (grandson).
The original marriage certificate is still preserved, so for their 80th anniversary, the city of Murfreesboro awarded them a recognition.
Despite everything, for his grandson, the true value of the couple does not lie only in the years, but in the family they built: three children, seven grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The descendant also added that his grandparents have been good people. «Their lives have not only been characterized by longevity, but also by service: decades in their community, church involvement, civic leadership, and a reputation for constant, quiet fidelity,» he detailed.
To close the message, John once again highlighted the feat related to the number of years the elderly have been together. «As far as we know, there are only 20 other known current marriages in the world that have lasted 80 years, and the Wikipedia list says there are only 136 recorded in history!» he concluded.
