When news broke that Chris Rodesch, Luxembourg’s top-ranked player and world number 150, would be absent, it was clear the Davis Cup showdown against Hungary would become even more challenging. The draw left Louis Van Herck, ranked 1,700 globally, facing Hungary’s number 60, Fabian Marozsan.
Although nerves were visible as Van Herck took to the court, he soon settled and gave an impressive performance, defying the vast ranking gap. Ultimately, he lost in straight sets 4-6, 4-6, but his tenacity and level of play brought pride to both himself and the team.
Reflecting on his debut, Van Herck said, “I have always dreamed of moments like this, and to experience it myself is hard to put into words. Even though it was a defeat, hoping for a win against a top-100 player would not have been realistic. Still, to have fought hard and created a moment of hope makes me proud. I hope the team feels the same.”
Next up was Luxembourg’s stalwart, Alex Knaff, often dubbed ‘Mr Davis Cup’ for his passion and performances in this competition. Knaff has thrived in the unique Davis Cup atmosphere, but on this occasion he was unable to trouble Zsombor Piros, falling 4-6, 0-6 as Hungary took a commanding 2-0 lead.
The doubles match on Saturday afternoon would decide the tie. Raphael Calzi and Alex Knaff, who had not played doubles together for over a year, struggled to find their rhythm. Hungary quickly took the first set 6-1, but the Luxembourg pair rallied in the second, pushing their opponents to a tiebreak. Ultimately, Hungary held firm, taking the set and clinching victory for the tie.
Afterwards, Calzi reflected, “We started better in the second set and kept pace throughout. At 6-5, when we were ahead, it felt like we might have made them nervous, but unfortunately we could not close out the set. Still, I am satisfied with how we performed in the second set overall.”
Alex Knaff honoured
Emotions ran high after the doubles match as Alex Knaff, who had announced before the tie that he would retire from international play, was honoured for his years of dedication and service to the Luxembourg national team.
While the team loses a key figure, Luxembourg Tennis Federation President Claude Lamberty remains optimistic about the future. “We have young talent in the pipeline, like Chris Rodesch, who is still very young himself. There is no need to worry about the future; I am optimistic for the national team and the Davis Cup squad. With Gilles Müller now also responsible for high-performance and talent development, we will continue to move forward and strengthen our network.”
Looking ahead, Luxembourg will next compete in a World Group I play-off to avoid relegation, with their opponent to be determined in an upcoming draw.
