At just 15 years old, Antonio Strejilevich has achieved a historic milestone for education in the region. The fifth year student of Rafael Hernández National School from La Plata was selected to join the Argentine delegation that will compete in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)which will take place in November in the city of Shanghai, China.
Antonio managed to get among the six best students in the country after passing a demanding selection process organized by the Argentine Mathematical Olympiad (OMA). His classification is no coincidence: the young man from La Plata has been building an outstanding career since primary school, accumulating provincial titles between 2022 and 2024 and a silver medal in the Rio de la Plata Olympics.
The path to International Mathematics Olympiad
“This year I was lucky to be a starter,” Antonio said with the humility that characterizes him. To achieve this level of excellence, the student trains intensely with his teacher, Yerimene Ariaspreparing to solve highly complex logical and mathematical problems, in one of the most prestigious and difficult competitions in the world.
Despite his young age, Antonio highlights the fundamental role of his environment: “I always had the support of my school and my family,” he said. However, the challenge now is not just academic. Looking ahead to the November trip, the financing still remains to be defined so that the delegation can travel to Asia, a no small detail to ensure Argentine participation in the competition.
The National College of La Plata once again positions itself as a reference center in the training of scientific talents. Antonio Strejilevich’s classification values logical thinking and dedication to study, demonstrating that, with teaching and institutional support, the city’s young people can compete at the highest global level.
