The conflict in Berisso Steelworks reached a new peak of tension: the firm’s workers denounced that, while awaiting payment of owed salaries and compensation, the company began a process of machinery emptying guarded by security forces.
Months without income and broken promises
The crisis is not new, but the patience of the workers has reached the limit. According to testimonies, the company owes salaries from Octoberincluding bonuses and unpaid vacations.
After the closure of the firm, dozens of families were left without a livelihood. Employees claim that managers are using the company’s capital for other purposes instead of paying off labor debts.
“We are not criminals”: complaints of intimidation
The unrest grew after the appearance of a new plant manager. The workers reported having received direct threats so that they do not approach the facilities, under warning of possible arrests.
«The situation is unacceptable. Workers are not criminals, we only demand what corresponds to us by law,» they expressed from the protest front.
The ghost of the «empty reopening»
The biggest fear of the operators is that the material removal maneuver, carried out under police custody, is the previous step to a definitive closure without paying a single peso.
However, there is also suspicion of a possible reopening under another firmbut without reincorporating current employees. Given this, the protests in front of the plant in Berisso remain firm, demanding the intervention of the labor authorities to stop the emptying and ensure jobs or full payment of compensation.
