“Baby Reindeer” comes to the theater: Nazareno Casero will be the protagonist

In April, Buenos Aires will host an international theatrical milestone. He April 28in the room Pablo Neruda from Paseo La Plaza (Av. Corrientes 1660), the Spanish version of “Baby Reindeer” the Scottish playwright’s one-man show Richard Gadd which served as the basis for the acclaimed Netflix miniseries of the same name. The person in charge of putting himself in the shoes of the protagonist will be the Argentine actor Homemade Nazarenein what he himself defines as the “most committed” work of his career.

From the stages of London to Corrientes Street

Few know it, but “Baby Reindeer” was first a play and only later became the famous seven-part dark miniseries that captivated the world in 2024. The one-man show, starring Gadd himself in London’s West End, won the prestigious Olivier Award in 2020 and now, for the first time, you will see a Spanish version in Buenos Aires.

The story centers on a struggling comedian and bartender who is constantly harassed by a woman and, at the same time, suffers the psychological consequences of abuse suffered in his youth. Far from being fiction, all the facts presented are autobiographical .

Nazareno Casero: “It is one of those stories where reality surpasses fiction”

Casero revealed that he did not see the series at the time, but some time later, and that only then did he understand the reason for the international success. «Richard’s is one of those stories when reality surpasses fiction. I was interested in how the series addressed such relevant and current topics as trauma, abuse, lack of limits and mental health,» explained the actor.

The single-person challenge

This is the first time that Casero ventures into a one-man show, and the contrast with the series is enormous: «In the series there are a lot of elements, from editing and music to a very varied cast. In the one-man show, all of that falls on me. The challenge is to use the voice, the body and the emotions to make that world and those characters appear in the viewer’s head.»

Regarding the responsibility of supporting the performance alone, he reflects: «All the tension and attention of the work goes through the sole actor and that has both pros and cons. On the one hand, I have total creative freedom to shape my character; on the other, I feel the weight of responsibility. That constant tension can be overwhelming, but it is also what makes this experience extraordinary.»

Working with Luis “Indio” Romero

The local production is in charge of the renowned director Luis “Indio” Romero (“The Amateur”, “Almost Normal”), who will focus the work on the intimate dimension of the text and in the emotional development of the character, with a immersive character thanks to the availability and proximity of the public.

Casero highlights the director’s work: «Indio Romero’s wonderful job is knowing where to look and find what is necessary to decode what I have for what this role needs. His analytical approach and artistic sensitivity allow me to question and go deeper, finding every detail necessary to do justice to the complexity of the character.»

The most committed job of his career

Just days away from turning 40 years of life and 30 years of profession, Casero does not hesitate to qualify this project: «Yes! Of course it is. This is an incredible experiment that is leading me to understand and learn things that I had not had the opportunity or the fortitude to experience. It is a challenge that fills me with life.»

Regarding how he faces expectations, he closes with a reflection: «Expectation generates suffering, Buddhists say… but when I do something, I do it with everything I have and always hoping for the best for each project. I have learned to embrace uncertainty and trust my creative process.»
