The last step of the reform
The panorama of public companies in Argentina has just taken a definitive turn. After months of efforts under the framework of DNU 70/2023, the National Government made official the transformation of Argentine Railways in a Unipersonal Limited Company (SAU). With this movement, the reorganization scheme that reached giants such as AySA, Aerolíneas Argentinas and Corredores Viales is completed.
As confirmed by the Inspector General of Justice, Daniel Roque Vítolo, the process concluded with the formal registration of the railway operator. This means that, although the State remains the sole owner of the shares for now, the company becomes governed by the Commercial Companies Law, just like any private company.
What does it mean for the CABA user?
For the thousands of Buenos Aires and Buenos Aires residents who pass through the Retiro, Constitución and Once terminals daily, this change is the starting point for a possible arrival of private capital.
By becoming SA, the train structure becomes more flexible to:
- Future privatizations or concessions: The new legal status makes it easier for private companies to buy shares or take charge of the operation of the branches.
- Strategic partnerships: It opens the door to external investments to improve infrastructure and rolling stock.
- Commercial management: The company will be able to operate with market rules, seeking greater operational efficiency.
The future of the railway network
The list of companies that have already gone through this process includes key sectors for life in the City, such as AySA e Intercharge. In the case of trains, the reconversion occurs in a context of urgent works on branches such as the Miter and the Sarmiento, where operational safety and frequency continue to be the issues that most concern residents.
From the Ministry of Economy they have already stated that the objective is for the State to get rid of strategic assets before the end of 2026. For now, the train whistle continues to sound, but the rules of the game have changed forever.
