The end of the year is coming and our agenda is full of events, farewells, school events, work meetings, and of course Christmas and New Year’s. We signed up for all of them, perfect attendance.
Meetings exist to celebrate, to share with those around us, to laugh, talk and accompany us. Although in our culture gathering is usually immediately associated with food, it is worth remembering that the real purpose of getting together is to strengthen bonds. When we focus on enjoyment, company and exchange, food stops taking center stage and becomes just a complement.
But how can we truly enjoy these encounters without unhealthy habits ending up affecting our health?
With the aim of going through these intense weeks without falling into stress or excess, two nutrition specialists share tips for carrying out healthy habits, they are Marina Ruiz – Graduate in Nutrition and Lic. Mariana Gitto – Functional Nutritionist of the Briut Salud team.
The lic. Marina Ruiz recommends:
-Do not arrive hungry to the celebration: do not fast beforehand. Many times we think that if we do not eat during the day, we make up for what we eat at night. Error, we arrive hungrier, we eat faster and in larger quantities. Maintaining 4 meals is key to better regulate appetite.
-Choose small, varied, fresh and healthy portions: choose to try everything without overdoing it, consciously selecting what and how much you eat. Including different flavors, colors and textures makes the meal more enjoyable and balanced.
-Propose activities that do not only revolve around food Games, karaoke, dancing, talks, recreational activities: Sharing from another place helps so that the focus is not only on what is on the table.
Along the same lines. Lic Mariana Gitto from Briut Salud adds:
-Eat slowly and consciously: enjoy each bite, chew well and pay attention to feelings of satiety. Enjoy food with the people you love.
-Take care of your alcohol consumption: if you choose to drink alcohol, combine it with water and moderate the amount. Remember that alcohol does not replace hydration and that you should not drive if you have consumed it. It is recommended to hydrate with water or natural water-based drinks, with lemon or orange, mint, ginger, basil, etc.
-Do not abandon physical activity: During the holiday weeks, try not to suspend your usual physical exercise routines. Look for the coolest times.
Likewise, it also highlights that it is important to find spaces to rest.
Ruiz and Guitto agree that it is essential to stay hydrated
drink enough water before, during and after meals. You can also prepare infusions or fresh water-based drinks with fruits, herbs or citrus fruits, avoiding added sugars.
Healthier options for New Year’s tables
There are other fresh and nutritious foods that can replace traditional preparations or complement the table. Lic. Marina Ruiz brings us some alternatives:
fresh salads
Salads are an excellent way to add freshness and nutrients to the table. Some suggested options are the light Waldorf, with pineapple, shredded chicken, celery, apple, walnuts and natural yogurt dressing with lemon, or the natural tuna salad with cucumber, red onion, avocado, white cheese and a touch of olive oil.
Healthy snacks
For the classic chopped dishes, you can choose balanced combinations such as natural ham, tenderloin, cherry tomatoes, cheeses, olives, nuts, cucumbers, eggplants, carrot and celery sticks, or capresse skewers.
Cold meats and nutritious dips
Cold meats such as fish, turkey or chicken can be accompanied with healthy dips, for example avocado and egg, carrot or beet. You can also add chickpea or eggplant hummus, Creole sauce or aioli, adding flavor without excess.
Fruits
Incorporating fruits is a simple way to add freshness and color. They can be served in bowls of cherries with ice, fruit skewers or varied fruit salads, becoming a delicious and nutritious dessert.
With these alternatives, it is possible to enjoy the celebration, combining flavor, color and nutrition, and preventing food from being the only protagonist on the table.
In this way, Ruiz and Gitto share recommendations to enjoy the holidays with health and conscience.
