Measuring like a soccer goal and weighing like an adult panda: the longest wild snake in the world is discovered

The organization Guinness World Records reported that he measured a wild snake in Indonesia and which turned out to be the longest in the world.

The existence of animal was announced by a local conservationist, who rescued him and moved him to his sanctuary.

There are ancient records of snakes of similar size, but they are not scientifically proven.

Seven meters and almost one hundred kilos: this is «The Baroness»

A reticulated python giant female (Malayopython reticulatus) discovered in late 2025 in the Maros region of Sulawesi, Indonesia, is the longest wild snake that has been formally measured.

The information was communicated by Guinness World Recordswhich on January 18 confirmed that The animal has a length of 7.22 meters from the head to the tip of the tail.

This means that, if placed on a standard goal of FIFA standard measurements (7.32 meters), this prodigious python would occupy practically the entire width from post to post.

Under anesthesia, when the snake’s body relaxes completely, it could be at least 10% longer, so in reality its length is probably around 7.9 meters.

However, due to the inherent risks of sedation, the record-keeping organization only measures species in their natural state.

The exceptional snake, which is now in the care of the local conservationist Budi Purwantowas evaluated by Diaz Nugraha, an expert in these types of animals, together with Radu Frentiu, explorer and natural history photographer.

Nugraha and Frentiu organized a trip to Sulawesi as soon as they heard rumors about this giant snake, eager to see it for themselves and make sure it was documented. They also hoped that highlighting this phenomenal specimen could help protect it.

«Each muscle on that snake is a source of energy, and it seemed to function individually. So it’s its power that impresses the most, along with its ability to expand to the swallow huge prey, even the size of a cow, something practically incomprehensible to most people,» Frentiu said.

In addition to measuring it, the python was also weighed and returned a figure of 96.5 kilos, the equivalent of the weight of a panda adult giant.

The extraordinary reptile has been named «Ibu Baron» (which translates as «The Baroness«), and was taken to a shrine created by Purwanto.

Budi, upon learning of her discovery in December 2025, rescued her from those who found her, to ensure that no harm came to her. He has done the same with several other snakes and now keeps them in their own enclosures on a farm in Maros County, to ensure their safety and that of the population.

In this part of Indonesia, there has been a conflict between people and snakes for some time, particularly with specimens the size of Ibu Baron.

They are considered a serious threat to livestock, pets, and even humans (particularly children). In recent years, several people have suffered attacks from them, as well as many domestic animals.

While none of the pythons are venomous, they are lethal due to their powerful and muscular bodies that are capable of coiling around a victim and squeezing them until suffocating them.

As a result, when reticulated pythons come close to an inhabited area, they tend to be exterminated immediately and, more commonly, are also hunted as a source of bushmeat.

Iconic species such as the reticulated python are also highly sought after within the illegal trade in exotic animalsso this is another threat that these reptiles face.

Other gigantic snakes

Las reticulated pythons They are, on average, the longest species of snake in the world, as their specimens range between 3 and 6 meters, although occasionally some longer ones have been documented.

In terms of weight, another constrictor surpasses them. Female green anaconda (Eunects of the mouse y Eunectes akaima), with a more voluminous body, they usually weigh between 30 and 70 kilos. However, extra-large specimens, after a large meal or during pregnancy, can reach up to 300 kilos.

Before the recent discovery, the longest scientifically measured wild reticulated python was a 6.95 meter female, also found in Indonesia, in 1999. It was known to have devoured a recently released sun bear, which was wearing a tracking device.

Over the decades and centuries, there have been historical reports of even longer wild reticulates, but Documentary evidence of their measurements is scarce or non-existent.

One expert maintains that even larger snakes may be found. Photo: Guinness World Records

An example that is often cited as the longest in the world was a reticulated python hunted in Sulawesi (then known as Sulawesi) in 1912, whose length was estimated at 10 metros.

Likewise, some reference books on reptiles, such as The Snakes of Malaya (1954), allude to extraordinary pythons that exceed 8 meters, but these are based only on anecdotal historical accounts.

More recently, in 2016, a huge reticulated python was found at a construction site on the island of Penang, Malaysia, whose dimensions ranged from 7.5 to 7.9 meters. While video of the snake appeared in the news, there are no records of a formal measurement being made.

For everything, The Baroness became the longest wild snake in the world. This could be short-lived, however, because pit viper expert Nugraha told Guinness that «It is quite realistic to expect 30-foot snakes to exist. or even larger somewhere, possibly also in Indonesia, or even in the Amazon basin.»
