The «Hotel Añaza», a giant abandoned since 1975

The death of the minor left the neighborhood shocked and revived the social demand for concrete measures. Due to the tragic background, some neighbors call the unfinished construction the ««Añaza monster».

The work began in 1973 under the command of a German company that was planning a complex of rooms with luxury views of the coast of turquoise waters, but all work stopped in 1975, and it never functioned as accommodation.

The building has been empty for more than 50 years. and presents structural risks: elevator shaftsopen windows and balconies without any type of protection or signage, in addition to perimeter fences that are frequently violated.

Five deaths and an urgent demolition request

Several neighborhood associations have filed complaints in the past, and claim that this is the fifth fatality registered. In 2017, four deaths were reported, three classified as «accidents» and one as a suspected suicide.

In recent years it has become a clandestine place frequented by many teenagers, who share photos and videos on their social networks.

Some even filmed themselves jumping from one balcony to another, risking a fatal fall, and that type of content generated even more views late at night.

On Google Maps there are recent images of the concrete giant, where you can see all the semi-constructed rooms, and demonstrate the dangers faced by all those who climb to the highest floors.

Selfies where the precipice can be seen behind the protagonists, close-ups of their shoes on the edge of balconies without railings, all kinds of graffiti from the abandoned interior and accumulated drink bottles.

As a result of the antecedents, the City Council of Santa Cruz and the Cabildo of Tenerife – the governing body of the entire island – agreed on a subsidy to pay for the building demolitionand after this new fatal incident the neighbors demand that the work be accelerated.
