The metro station in Saudi Arabia that works like a giant mirror and reflects Riyadh in 360 degrees

In Riyadh, capital of Saudi Arabiaa new one stands out metro station that redefines the concept of urban architecture with a avant-garde design which is shocking since it looks like a huge suspended “mirror” that reflects the city in 360 degrees.

It’s about the station Qasr Al Hokmone of the main nodes of the transportation system, which also functions as a public square.

Located in the historic centerclose to key areas such as the old palace and the district Al Dahothis station not only connects two metro linesbut also integrates with the urban environment. The proposal was developed by the international studio Snøhetta, with an approach that mixes architecture, culture and urban landscaping.

A mirror roof that reflects the city and guides users

The central element of the station is a Huge polished stainless steel cover that acts as a continuous mirror. Its curved surface reflects everything that happens below and around it, generating a complete image of the city in real time.

This “mirror ceiling” It often works like an urban periscope Since when leaving the subway, users can look up and see the surroundings reflected, which makes orientation easier. Conversely, those on the surface also see the movement of the square reflected, generating a constant visual connection.

The structure is made up of double-curved steel panels of just 8 millimetersassembled to achieve a continuous surface without interruptions. In addition, it incorporates solar panels on the top, which adds energy efficiency to the design.

An underground garden 35 meters underground

Below the plaza, the station develops in depth with a large central atrium that reaches about 35 meters below the city level. In that space, the subway lines pass through glass tubes that allow you to see the trains in motion from different levels.

At the base of the atrium appears a underground garden with plants and rest areasintended as a refuge from the extreme heat of Riad. Thanks to the depth, the environment maintains a more stable temperature even in summer.

The design also incorporates a water reuse system since what is collected on the surface and on the roof is used to irrigate this green space, integrating sustainability and comfort.

Beyond its function as transportation, The metro station was designed as an urban meeting point. The access plaza, covered in terrazzo, connects with a nearby mosque and a large space used for religious celebrationswhich allows the entire set to work in an integrated manner.

Inside, details inspired by the Najdi traditional architecture They provide local identity, with geometric perforations that filter light and visually connect the different levels.

The project is completed with a great multimedia wall of more than 100 meters that combines lighting, sound and visual contentreinforcing the user experience. Thus, the station stops being just a place of passage and becomes an active space within the city.
