A strong explosion took place this Wednesday after a freight train carrying fuel and lubricants derailed and overturned. It happened in the Russian region of Tambov, near the Kochetovka-2 railway station and 400 kilometers from Moscow.
As it turned out, the training took at least 16 tank carsof which 11 were loaded with gasoline and another 5 with gas.
Yevgeny Pervyshov, the governor of Tambov, said this Wednesday through his Telegram account that «during the night, a fire that affected tank cars on the tracks of the Kochetovka station in Michurinsk was contained to an area of approximately 50 square meters.»
«There are no injuries and no threat to residents or other infrastructure,» said the official, who also indicated that the situation «is completely under control.»
Pervyshov stressed that in the area 2 trains and 25 fire trucks were deployed to fight the fire and that, once extinct, the tracks will be inspected to try to detect damage and begin restoration tasks.
The official also maintained that the information about the victims is still being «clarified» and that The cause of the fire will be determined once it is extinguished.
Meanwhile, the Tambo governorate indicated that freight and passenger trains that were supposed to transit through the area are being diverted around Kochetovka and that railway workers «are taking measures to reduce delays.»
