In an interview with GQ, Jean Touitouthe designer and creator of the Parisian brand specialized in jeans A.P.C.revealed his secret to washing pants and making them look like new.
“When my jeans start to smell a little, “I wash them in the washing machine, but with cold water and very little detergent.”Touitou said.
The clarification of the detergent is because common soaps have compounds that can ruin the color and texture of the material or leave them somewhat hard after washing. The washing machine program should be short and with a gentle spin.
So, the keys are: delicate wash, gentle spin, cold water and little detergent.
To store them and prevent them from getting wrinkled or stained, Touitou recommends having several of the same or similar jeans and hanging them without stacking them and numbering them so as not to wear the same one too many times. Thus prevents wear of the garment.
Why is cold water recommended for washing jeans?
The fabric of jeans is called denim. It is a resistant cotton fabric made with a technique called twill (twill), which is recognized by its diagonal pattern.

Therefore, when the jean wears out, those lighter or “washed” areas appear.
Cold water is recommended for washing jeans for several reasons related to preserving the color, shape and useful life of the garment.
First, denim—especially indigo-dyed— tends to fade with hot water. By washing cold, pigment loss is reduced and the jean maintains its original tone for longer, preventing it from becoming dull or with irregular wear spots.
Besides, Hot water weakens the cotton fibers and can cause the jean to shrink or lose its shape.. Cold washing, on the other hand, is less aggressive: it helps preserve the structure of the fabric, maintains the original fit and prevents the fabric from becoming stiff or brittle over time.
Finally, washing cold is also more sustainable: it consumes less energy and, by requiring less wear and tear on the garment, prolongs its useful life.
