The Rombergpark botanical garden in Dortmund (Germany) reported the theft of a giant hoop flower («Amorphophallus titanum») called «David'», an extremely rare plant known for its enormous size and its strong smell of decomposing flesh, according to reports Spiegel.
The garden staff described the event as an «irreparable» loss for the institution and for the visitors who were waiting for its next flowering, reports RT.
The giant ring specimen or Amorphophallus titanum, is a very particular plant because it only produces flowers in interrupted periods of several years and, above all, it emits a strong and bad smell.

The plant blooms through a plant structure that groups flowers called in botany an inflorescence.
Many visitors comment on the smell of the plant, which is why, not in vain, it is also known as the «corpse plant.»
The strong smell comes, especially, on the first night, with a smell of carrion to attract insects interested in laying their eggs in a corpse, according to the strategy of this plant with which it seeks to pollinate and be pollinated.

A huge plant
At about 2.36 meters, the flowering stage of the flower is also known as the «largest flower in the world» and is one of the most spectacular events in the plant kingdom.
In nature it can reach up to 3 meters, and its tuber has weighed up to 100 kilos.
The plant extracts resources from this tuber to grow and it is estimated in botany that the growth rate can reach up to fifteen centimeters per day.

As a species, the giant rings are native to the western parts of the islands of Sumatra and Java, and were discovered in 1878 by the Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari.
