Amsterdam City Council has warned a landlord who systematically rejects men as tenants and has given it two weeks to modify its rental policy, under threat of a fine of 10,000 euros if it persists in discrimination based on gender.
This is the first time that the Dutch municipal authorities have acted in a case of this type, as it is usually difficult to gather sufficient evidence to sanction landlords for discrimination for any of the possible reasons.
The action began after a complaint from a housing applicant who was explicitly rejected for being a man and, after an investigation, the council discovered that the practice was common: the contracts specified that the tenants had to be «Dutch working women» and in online advertisements only women were accepted.

The owner must present his version of the accusations within a period of two weeks and, if he does not modify the contracts and his rental policy, the fine will be imposed, according to the regional radio station. NH.
No discrimination
Since January 2024, the municipal Good Rental Practices team has been monitoring abusive behavior by landlords, such as intimidation, excessive deposits, opaque costs, and discrimination in the selection process.
The City Council has a contact point so that tenants and applicants for rental housing can report irregularities.

The Councilor for Public Housing, Zita Pels, stressed that proving discrimination is usually complicated because there is often no written or digital evidence and explained that, for this reason, the municipality advises collecting emails or call recordings as evidence.
«Whether it’s discrimination by skin color, religion, sexual orientation or genderit is not allowed,» declared Pels, who promised that, from the city council, «we will always try to act against this type of behavior.»
