While the national university system is going through one of the most critical moments due to defunding, the National University of La Plata redoubles the bet with infrastructure and social support. The progress of the first Student Neighborhood of the region is not only an architectural work; It is a political statement in defense of public education, and a symbol of progress in the face of structural inequality, as the university cafeteria and the student ticket were at the time.
A milestone in Berisso: the Student Neighborhood
The UNLP completed the first housing module on the Berisso property. It is about 24 casas completely completed that mark the beginning of an unprecedented project for Argentine higher education. The goal? Guarantee a roof for students who come from other cities and cannot afford the costs of a private rental. La Plata is not an economically accessible city for future students from the interior of the country.
The development of the UNLP included the construction of a first module with 24 homes, but the construction of the second complex is already underway, which will include another 24 apartments. They will operate under a tenancy system, with affordable, social rents, which will be regulated and defined by the UNLP Superior Council. Vice President Fernando Tauber recently toured the units, which already have equipment and services, ready to receive their first inhabitants in this new school year.
The university residence is located on a property in the vicinity of avenues 60 and 64, from 127 to 143, in the town of Berisso. The authorities of the university gave notice that, during the month of April, the UNLP University Welfare Commission will meet and work to define and establish the registration mechanisms.
More than a career: the welfare system
Real estate development is just one piece of the puzzle. For the university to be truly inclusive, the UNLP supports a support network that is vital today in the face of the economic crisis:
- University Dining Halls: With offices distributed throughout the city, they guarantee thousands of daily rations at subsidized prices.
- Comprehensive scholarships: From connectivity to financial aid and transportation, scholarships are the engine that allows a worker’s child to be the first in their family to graduate.
The public university as a shield
In a context where the budget for science and higher education is questioned, the UNLP is positioned as a key actor for the sovereign development of the country.
Building a student neighborhood or keeping a dining room open is not an expense, it is a strategic investment. The public university in La Plata demonstrates that, in the face of attempted financial asphyxiation, the response is more management, more works and an unwavering commitment to upward social mobility.
