Women from La Plata: Majo and Vicky Granatto

The Granatto sisters are the Lionesses of Gonnet who conquered the world and today lead a legacy of identity and social commitment in the sport of La Plata.

The story of María José and Victoria Granatto is the story of a deep roots that was born on the fields of our region. Although their first sporting steps were taken outside the city, it was in the town of Gonnet where they found their true home. The Santa Bárbara Club became the stage where they forged an identity that today they carry with pride in the most important stadiums on the planet.

For the Granatto sisters, success is not measured only in medals, but in belonging to the institution that saw them grow up. Victoria, born in 1991, and “Majo”, in 1995, grew up in a family where effort was the rule to sustain the passion for sport. This training in the neighborhood clubs of La Plata shaped the character of those who today are the greatest leaders of the discipline at the national level.

Majo broke into the elite with a skill that led her to be chosen twice in a row as the Best Young Player in the World by the FIH. Her meteoric rise never took her away from her roots; On the contrary, he usually remembers with pride his years as a student in the city. In 2022, her talent was once again rewarded when she was named the best player in the World Cup, consolidating her status as an international figure.

Victoria, for her part, built her path through exemplary perseverance that led her to be an immovable piece of Las Leonas. Together, the sisters achieved historic milestones for La Plata sports, such as the Silver Medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. In January 2026, both were called upon again to represent the country, reaffirming a validity that seems to have no ceiling.

The Granatto legacy transcends titles to become a strong social commitment to the community. Both define themselves as «citizens before athletes» and use their voice to call for more inclusive and accessible hockey in the region. Their decision to continue competing with the Santa Barbara jersey shows that, for them, the sense of belonging is the most important achievement of their careers.

Today, Majo and Vicky are the symbol of a city that exports talent to the world without ever losing its local essence. By watching them train every week in Gonnet, the new generations of athletes understand that they can reach the top without forgetting the path they have traveled. The Granatto showed that true success is succeeding abroad, always keeping your heart in the club where you were born.
