The trail of Margrete Heiberg de Bose (or Margarita Bose) in the city of knowledge: how a pioneer of modern science built the academic prestige of La Plata
Born in Denmark and trained in the most prestigious scientific centers in Europe, Margrete Heiberg de Bose was one of the most brilliant minds that inhabited our city at the beginning of the 20th century. Her arrival in Argentina in 1909, together with her husband Emil Bose, marked a before and after for the young National University of La Plata, which sought to position itself as a world scientific reference.
Margrete was not an assistant, but an elite scientist in her own right. In 1910, she became the only woman to participate in the International Scientific Congress, an event where men dominated the scene. There he presented cutting-edge work on experimental physics that astonished his colleagues, demonstrating an analytical capacity that broke all gender prejudices of the time.
His work in La Plata was fundamental for the creation and organization of the UNLP laboratories. She brought modern methods of experimentation that allowed local students to be trained to European standards. Margrete not only investigated complex physical processes, but also ensured that La Plata science had solid foundations and cutting-edge tools for its time.

Despite his immense preparation, his path in the city was not easy. After the death of her husband, Margrete had to fight against a university structure that was reluctant to grant hierarchical positions to a woman, even though she was the one who maintained the academic level of the chair. That perseverance made her a symbol of resistance for women in science.
Today, his legacy can be felt in each research institute on Paseo del Bosque. Margrete Heiberg of Bose was the woman who transformed laboratories into prestigious spaces and demonstrated that scientific excellence has no gender. Remembering its history is understanding why La Plata is, from its foundations, a true «City of Knowledge.»
