A Chicago police officer was killed and another was in critical condition after a suspect opened fire while in custody inside a hospital, officials said.
Officers brought the unidentified suspect, who was in custody, to the Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital around 9 a.m. for treatment, police and the hospital said. The suspect was scanned with weapon-detection tools by hospital security, the hospital said in a statement.

Around 11 a.m. the suspect got a hold of a firearm, began shooting and fled, according to the hospital. Two officers were shot, one of whom was pronounced dead at the hospital, the police said.
«No team members or patients were physically harmed as a result of this incident,» Endeavor Health said in a statement.
The suspect was apprehended a short time later.

The hospital said there was no «active threat» within the hospital and patients and staff are safe.
