A new archaeological discovery in Mexico put the focus back on the sophistication of the Mayan civilization. Researchers found a settlement with around 80 structures in the state of Quintana Rooincluding buildings with vaults, ceremonial spaces and remains of mural painting.
The site not only surprised the research specialists because of the level of conservation it has, but also because architectural complexity of several of the buildings.
According to the archaeologists, the settlement presents typical characteristics of important Mayan centers and could provide key information about the social and political organization of the region.
In addition to the buildings, one of the elements that caught the most attention was the presence of murals and decorative details that allow us to learn about cultural aspects, rituals and the art of the ancient civilization.
What is the Mayan settlement found in Quintana Roo like?
The discovered site includes approximately 80 structures distributed in different sectors. Among them are platforms, ceremonial buildings and constructions with vaults typical of Mayan architecture. It was officially discovered on April 27 and 28, 2026 by the Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and was called «The Little Boss«.
The researchers detected remains of polychrome mural painting and monumental architectural complexes that reveal the double function of the site: a center of high ritual activity, evidenced by elite burials and sacred remodeling, and the political-administrative core from which the region was governed.
As explained by the archaeologists who carried out the research, several of these constructions show extremely advanced architectural techniques and a very well-organized urban design.
The location of the settlement is also strategic because connects with other areas historically linked to the expansion of the Mayan civilization in the Yucatan Peninsula.
Specialists believe that the discovery could help to better understand how different settlements were organized Mayans outside the best-known large centers.
Another relevant aspect is that much of the jungle territory of Quintana Roo It still preserves archaeological areas that have not been completely studied.
Therefore, each new discovery partially modifies the historical map of the Mayan civilization and expands knowledge about its territorial expansion.
