Erik Lamela, a former footballer who emerged from River Plate and with an outstanding career in clubs such as Rome, Tottenham and Seville, announced his professional retirement at the age of 33. His last team was AEK Athens in Greece, which he joined in July 2024 as a free agent with a contract until 2027. In the Greek club he played 31 official matches, scored 6 goals and gave 3 assists, but in August 2025 he agreed to an amicable termination to end his career. Before his time in Greece, Lamela played for Sevilla (2021-2024), where he won the 2023 Europa League, and previously played in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, after his years in Serie A with Roma.
The reason for his retirement was the physical deterioration accumulated over more than a decade. For 11 years he had had a chronic problem in his hips, operated on in 2017, which forced him to live with constant pain. During the last five years he played every game medicated with pills to be able to compete, in addition to undergoing injections, physiotherapy and intensive gym training. “For 5 years I have been taking pills every game to be able to compete… today I decide to put an end to all this,” he expressed in a message full of sincerity and emotion.
After hanging up his boots, Lamela begins a new stage as technical assistant at Sevilla, where he will work alongside Matías Almeyda. Although he did not confirm it publicly, everything indicates that he will settle again in the city of Seville, where he already left his mark as a player and maintains strong emotional ties.
