Devastating earthquake in Venezuela: at least 164 dead

Two strong earthquakes shook Venezuela this Wednesday and left a preliminary toll of at least 164 people dead, more than a thousand injured and severe material damage in different regions of the country, especially in Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira.

As reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the seismic movements reached magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 and occurred less than a minute apart. The epicenter was located in the central-northern Venezuelan area and the tremors were also perceived in Colombia and other Caribbean countries.

Authorities reported the collapse of buildings, massive power outages and scenes of panic in the streets of Caracas, where thousands of people evacuated homes and offices due to fear of new aftershocks. Rescue teams worked throughout the night searching for survivors in the rubble.

In addition to damage to homes and public buildings, the earthquake affected road infrastructure and basic services in several locations. Several routes remained partially blocked by landslides and debris, while emergency crews worked to restore power and communications.

In the most affected areas, temporary evacuation centers were set up to house families who lost their homes or who could not return to their homes due to the risk of collapse. Humanitarian organizations and volunteers collaborated with the distribution of water, food, medicine and basic necessities.

The interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, declared an emergency in the affected regions and assured that all State resources were made available for assistance tasks. Likewise, several Latin American countries expressed their solidarity with the Venezuelan people and offered help for rescue and reconstruction efforts.

Seismology specialists explained that the intensity of the movements generated concern about the possibility of new aftershocks in the coming days. For this reason, the authorities recommended avoiding damaged buildings and following the instructions of civil protection organizations.

While the search efforts continue, the country is going through hours of deep commotion. The authorities are still working on identifying victims and do not rule out that the number of deaths will increase as operations progress in the areas most affected by the tragedy.
