A study by CONICET La Plata makes it to the cover of Nature while Argentine science fights to survive

A team from CONICET La Plata achieved something that rarely happens: that a magazine of the prestige of Nature Communications chooses its image to illustrate the cover. The news comes in the midst of a climate where the Argentine scientific system is discussing cuts, frozen salaries and the flight of researchers. Is international prestige enough to compensate for what happens behind closed doors?

The cover of the latest issue of Nature Communications, one of the most influential multidisciplinary scientific publications in the world, is not illustrated by a finding from a European research center or an American university. It was chosen by researchers from CONICET La Plata, through a team based at the Chascomús Technological Institute, INTECH, which depends on that same La Plata regional center in conjunction with UNSAM. The image portrays the cyst formation strategy of Tritrichomonas fetus, the parasite responsible for bovine tritrichomonosis, a disease that directly hits the pockets of the livestock sector.

The work was led by Verónica Cóceres, a CONICET researcher, who explained that the team managed to verify for the first time that the parasite is capable of generating cysts or forms of resistance when subjected to different types of stress, whether lack of nutrients, changes in pH or exposure to metronidazole, the drug that was historically used to treat it. According to the researcher, these cysts function as a pause state: the parasite remains latent until it receives a stimulus, at which time it can replicate its DNA and multiply from a single original individual.

The finding has a specific practical derivation. The reproductive losses that tritrichomonosis causes in livestock represent considerable economic damage to Buenos Aires and national production. Understanding how the parasite resists current treatments opens the door to more effective herd management strategies and to thinking about alternative antiparasitic therapies, in an exchange that the team itself describes as a round trip between the laboratory and the ordinary producer.

Cóceres stressed that the Nature distinction «contributes to increasing the international visibility of research» and that it helps to «internationally position the research carried out in Argentina» in areas such as animal health and parasitology. It is an achievement that does not depend on the situation, but on years of work by a team that makes up the La Plata scientific system, one of the largest in the country in volume of institutes and research personnel.

But the news is not isolated from the context. CONICET has just gone through 2025 and 2026 marked by public discussion about funding for science, with complaints from organizations and unions about delayed salaries, frozen scholarships and a constant trickle of researchers who choose to continue their careers abroad. In this framework, every international achievement should not be read as an argument in favor of adjustment. CONICET can display this cap as proof that there are teams capable of competing with any center in the world, but that says nothing about how much of that level can be sustained if conditions—salaries, scholarships, budget—continue to deteriorate. La Plata concentrates a good part of that tension: it has the institutes, but also a good part of the complaints.

Is this Nature cover a triumph despite the adjustment or a sign that the structure still holds up? It is difficult to settle that discussion with a single case, no matter how resonant it may be. What is clear is that while the budget debate is still open in the offices, in the laboratories of CONICET La Plata the research did not stop. The question that remains for the scientific system is how much longer it can sustain results at this level if baseline conditions continue to deteriorate.
