A British warship crossed the Argentine sea without prior warning

The ocean patrol vessel HMS Medway sailed through national waters off Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego on its way to Chile. The opposition presented a tough request for reports in Congress demanding explanations from the Foreign Ministry, which opted for silence months before a presidential trip to London.

The geopolitical scenario in the extreme south of the country once again set off alarm bells after it was confirmed that the British Navy’s ocean patrol vessel, the HMS Medwaytransited through Argentine jurisdictional waters without issuing the prior mandatory notifications. The incident, which occurred between Thursday, July 2 and Friday, July 3, unleashed a strong repudiation from the Tierra del Fuego government and an immediate legislative reaction in the National Congress.

The English military unit set sail from the Malvinas Islands bound for the Strait of Magellan to head towards Chile. During its journey, it entered the Exclusive Economic Zone under Argentine control off the coasts of Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego. Although the United Kingdom authorities later claimed to have reported the step, reports from the Argentine Armed Forces confirmed that the communication was late and not prior, violating post-war bilateral protocols.

Radar detection and water monitoring

Despite the lack of formal notice, the national control systems operated immediately:

  • Alert in the Navy: The warship was detected early by the Argentine naval command as it advanced towards the Strait.
  • Air tracking: A surveillance aircraft Beechcraft B-200M “Cormorant” of the Argentine Navy, equipped with electro-optical technology, carried out technical and visual monitoring of the trajectory of the patrol boat during its passage through the region.

The opposition demands answers in Congress

Given the institutional gravity of the event, a block of national deputies of Federal Peronism, headed by Guillermo Michel and accompanied by signatures such as Victoria Tolosa Paz, Kelly Olmos and Juan Pablo Luque, presented a project to demand that the Executive Branch render detailed accounts.

The legislators aim to know if there was any type of tacit authorization from the Government or what specific measures were adopted by the Ministry of Defense and the Foreign Ministry once the entry of the ship was completed. The request places special emphasis on the rupture of the Madrid Agreements I and II (signed after the 1982 conflict), which legally oblige both nations to maintain a Reciprocal Information and Consultation System with strict advance notice to avoid military «miscalculations» in the South Atlantic.

Silence from the Chancellery and the shadow of an official trip

While the provincial government of Tierra del Fuego expressed a strong rejection, the San Martín Palace maintained a hermetic silence and avoided issuing formal diplomatic complaints to London. In the political corridors the data is not surprising: the paralysis in sovereign claims coincides with the preparations of the official agenda of President Javier Milei, who plans to make a state visit to Great Britain during the month of October. The official directive would seem aimed at cooling any source of bilateral friction.

On the other hand, defense analysts warn that the HMS Medway was intended to participate in exercises and «bilateral security collaboration» meetings with the Chilean navy, which revives historical concern about the use of the infrastructure of Chilean Patagonia as logistical support for the British occupation fleet in our islands.
