Aadam Jacobs brought to light in Chicago 10,000 tapes of live and secretly recorded rock bands. It started with this as a hobby at 15 years old and then it became routine.
The publication of this material carried out by the digital library Internet Archive, shook the industria musical: there are everything from intimate sessions in bars to massive concerts of world tours by Nirvana, Pink Floyd or Bruce Springsteen.
The American collector began the journey of collecting bootlegs (unofficial recording of unreleased content) by filming at first with a dictaphone device that he carried in his pocket. The microphones hidden among the public managed capture energy of each of the concerts and the recordings offer professional audio quality for that time.
He then sought to continue perfecting his tapes and purchased a Sony Walkman recorder. Year after year, he collected more tapes that he stored. With the premiere of the documentary «Melomaniac» about its content, the team Internet Archive the proposal preserve and digitize tapes. Jacobs highlighted that accepted the proposal before they began to deteriorate and fail over the years.
The digitization of the material
Brian Emerick, from the digital library, travels to the collector’s house every month to take 10 to 20 boxes with between 50 and 100 recording tapes that will be converted into digital files.
This is how they are received by the volunteers in charge of mixing, mastering and then publishing the recitals on the platform. Since the end of 2024 they have already been digitalized more than 5500 tapes.

Regarding copyright, the collector states that artists appreciate that their works are preserved but that he is willing to download the recordings if asked.
«So far only one or two authors have requested it,» Jacobs said. The project is focused on the conservation and cultural diffusion, no economic benefits.
The impact for fans and rock culture
This project reveals previously unknown information about the chronology of the bands. For fans, it is unreleased material that reveals secrets, revisits in the present the albums that have already remained in rock memory and opens the door for them to enter the musical radar of new generations.
Along these lines, it combines the experience of a live show with the spontaneity of not knowing that there was a microphone on while recording.

Aadam’s habit of recording in clubs built a routine where for years he captured something that would not have been obtained otherwise.
Among the notable recordings is the presentation of Nirvana in the little club Dreamerztwo years before the publication of his second disco «Nevermind». In addition, presentations from other groups are included such as The Cure and emerging musicians.
As they point out on the Aadam Jacobs blog, before uploading the first file they already knew that the recordings would awaken memories, conversations and connections. Due to the volume of the project, if someone wanted to listen to all the recordings without interruptions it would take approximately a year and a half.
