The Trinidad and Tobago police announced this Wednesday that they are searching for a group of thieves captured by a camera, which They used a backhoe to try to rob an ATMbut they ruined the bizarre robbery so much that they ended up becoming memes.
Security camera footage shows at least four suspects struggling at the crime scene. One of them bore a striking resemblance to Batman: He was wearing black clothing, a dark balaclava, and what appeared to be a black poncho. that waved in the wind like the superhero cape. That person is seen tripping over debris and falling to the ground while trying to steer the backhoe.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service said the suspects’ «efforts to remove the vault proved futile as the arm of the backhoe was damaged» during the incident, which occurred early Wednesday.
The suspects managed to move the ATM to the sidewalk with the backhoe, which police say they stole from a nearby beach. However, when the machine’s arm stopped working—and when their joint efforts to load the ATM into a small truck also failed—the suspects gave up and sped away in what police said was a stolen vehicle.
A robbery that caused laughter
The detached ATM was left exposed, and authorities later responded to the scene in Tobago, the smaller of the nation’s two islands. According to the timestamp of the security video, the failed attempt lasted more than 10 minutesall while a state of emergency remains in force.
The video of the attempted robbery quickly went viral. Memes appeared on social networks, listeners calling morning radio shows they mocked the frustrated thieves and a local newspaper titled its article: “’Batman’ and robbing,” alluding to the so-called “dynamic duo” of comics, made up of Batman and Robin.
Trinidad and Tobago recently extended its state of emergency by three months, until September, as authorities grapple with a wave of violent crime.
