In their first fixture since the challenging Nations League B campaign in June, the Red Lionesses took on Malta away on Sunday evening.
From the start, the Red Lionesses, playing without Charlotte Schmit due to a broken rib, held the lion’s share of possession.
They carved out their first good chance after just three minutes, though Kimberley Dos Santos failed to make clean contact with the ball in the middle.
Twenty minutes in, Malta’s goalkeeper Maya Cachia fouled a Luxembourg player, with a penalty awarded to the Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF) women’s team.
Marta Esteves stepped up to take it, but the Racing player was unable to convert, and the score stayed at 0-0.
After the break, Malta pushed in front. In the 57th minute, Inter Milan’s Haley Bugeja scored 1-0 for the home side.
Malta continued to carve out further chances, including a penalty that Lucie Schlimé managed to save, but the scoreline remained the same, with the match ending 0-1.
Next up for the FLF women’s team is a home fixture against Montenegro on Tuesday, taking place in Rumelange. Kick-off is at 7pm, with admission free.
The match will be broadcast on RTL Play.
