The inflation in La Plata recorded an increase in 2.2% during Mayaccording to the latest survey carried out by the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the National University of La Plata (UNLP) together with the local Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services.
According to the report, the Basic Price Index (IPB) accumulated a rise of 15.9% in the first five months of 2026while the interannual variation reached 34,2%.
The study surveys monthly the evolution of the prices of goods and services consumed by La Plata households and allows the impact of inflation on the region’s economy to be analyzed.
Food and beverages pushed prices up again
The category Food and non-alcoholic beverages It once again had a significant impact on the general index and explained close to one percentage point of monthly inflation.
According to the survey, food increased on average by 1,9% during May. Among the products that rose the most, the meat and dairywith increments of 2,4%while the baked goods registered a variation of the 1,8%.
Beverages and infusions, meanwhile, showed one of the largest increases in the sector by registering an increase in 3,2%.
Transportation and fuels led the increases
The largest increase of the month was observed in the category Transportation and fuelswhich recorded an average variation of 4,8%.
The main explanation was linked to the increase in bus ticketwhich during May increased by 15,8% as part of the tariff update scheme applied in the province of Buenos Aires.

For their part, liquid fuels registered a more moderate rise in 1,2%although they also impacted household monthly spending.
The products and services that increased the most
Among the goods and services with the greatest increases during May, the bus ticket topped the ranking with an increase of 15,8%.
