Inflation in La Plata was 2.2% in May

It accumulated 15.9% so far this year. Transportation, food and services were the items that had the most impact on the increase.

The inflation in La Plata recorded an increase in 2.2% during Mayaccording to the latest survey carried out by the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the National University of La Plata (UNLP) together with the local Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services.

According to the report, the Basic Price Index (IPB) accumulated a rise of 15.9% in the first five months of 2026while the interannual variation reached 34,2%.

The study surveys monthly the evolution of the prices of goods and services consumed by La Plata households and allows the impact of inflation on the region’s economy to be analyzed.

Food and beverages pushed prices up again

The category Food and non-alcoholic beverages It once again had a significant impact on the general index and explained close to one percentage point of monthly inflation.

According to the survey, food increased on average by 1,9% during May. Among the products that rose the most, the meat and dairywith increments of 2,4%while the baked goods registered a variation of the 1,8%.

Beverages and infusions, meanwhile, showed one of the largest increases in the sector by registering an increase in 3,2%.

Transportation and fuels led the increases

The largest increase of the month was observed in the category Transportation and fuelswhich recorded an average variation of 4,8%.

The main explanation was linked to the increase in bus ticketwhich during May increased by 15,8% as part of the tariff update scheme applied in the province of Buenos Aires.

For their part, liquid fuels registered a more moderate rise in 1,2%although they also impacted household monthly spending.

The products and services that increased the most

Among the goods and services with the greatest increases during May, the bus ticket topped the ranking with an increase of 15,8%.

Behind were the gas natural with an increase of 7,1%las tapas for empanadas with a 7%he lactal bread with a variation of 5,8% and the videos with an increase of 4,5%.

In contrast, the category of hygiene and cleanliness showed an increase in 1%while the dress practically no changes were recorded, with a variation of barely 0,2%.

The data reflect a more moderate inflation than that recorded during 2024, although food, transportation and services They continue to be the main factors that put pressure on the cost of living of the residents of La Plata.
