The municipality presented a free contest for emerging bands from the city, with a prize that is no less important: a place in the line-up of Quilmes Rock 2027. The call promises a national showcase for the underground of La Plata.
The Municipality of La Plata presented this Thursday La Plata Rock, a new program aimed at promoting emerging bands in the city. The launch took place in the Golden Hall of the Municipal Palace, hosted by journalist Juan Di Natale, and included the participation of the singer and composer Carmen Sánchez Viamonte, along with other figures of local music and culture.
The proposal works as an open and free call, intended exclusively for artists from the La Plata district. Registration will remain open between July and October 2026 and can be done through the site www.laplatarock.com.ar. According to the requirements published on the contest’s website, to participate you must be a citizen of the municipality or have at least one member of the band residing in the city, although the case of artists who developed their musical career there is also admitted.
The rest of the mechanism is already defined. A jury made up of Marcelo Moura, from Virus; Michel Peyronel, from Riff; Goura, from Fongrama; the photographer Martín Bonetto; the cultural manager Paula Rivera; the musician Federico Moura, and Di Natale himself, will evaluate the registered bands. The finalist groups will perform live during Music Week in La Plata, where the winner will be defined, who will obtain a place in the line-up of Quilmes Rock 2027, one of the most popular rock festivals in the country.
The municipality framed the initiative within the rock tradition of the city, which was the birthplace of bands such as Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota, Virus, Estelares, Él Mató a un Police Motorizado, Guasones and Peces Raros, among others. The bet is that this historical legacy functions as a platform for a new generation of artists, in a city that also supports, outside of any official program, an independent circuit that has been promoting its own bands for years.
The initiative joins other cultural policies of the municipality, such as the streaming catalog La Plata es Música, in a city that also has the permanent contribution of the Faculty of Arts and a university scene in constant movement.
