‘Mammoth’ bones kept in museum for 70 years turn out to be from a different animal

Los mammoth bones had spent more than 70 years stored inside an Alaska museum under an identification that seemed correct. Since the middle of the last century, the remains were considered part of an ancient mammoth found in the interior of the North American state.

Everything changed when a new group of researchers decided reanalyze the pieces with modern dating techniques and genetic studies. There appeared an unexpected result: the bones did not belong to a mammoth, but to two species of whale.

The review was carried out on remains found in the 1950s nearly Fairbanks. For decades they remained archived within the University of Alaska Museum of the North without anyone much questioning their original classification.

The first sign that something was not closing appeared when the Scientists carried out new tests for carbon 14.

The results indicated that the bones they had between 1,800 and 2,700 years old, too recent for a mammoth If you take into account that these animals They disappeared from mainland Alaska about 13,000 years ago.

From there, other analyzes began on the chemical composition and isotopes present in the remains. The values found coincided more with marine organisms than with a large terrestrial herbivore.

They kept bones of

Then came the ancient DNA studies. There the mystery was finally solved: one of the remains belonged to a minke whale and the other to a North Pacific right whale.

The discovery was even more surprising for another reason. The bones had been found about 400 kilometers from the nearest coast, deep inside Alaska.

Why is it disconcerting that whale remains appeared so far from the sea?

Researchers use different hypotheses to explain How did those remains get to that region? One possibility is that there was historical confusion in the labeling of pieces within the museum.

There is also a theory that ancient human groups moved whale parts inland centuries ago, possibly to use the bones as tools or materials.

Specialists almost completely ruled out the possibility that the whales had entered naturally through ancient waterways, mainly due to the size of these animals and the geographical characteristics of the area. The case again showed how many fossils studied decades ago can completely change interpretation when new analysis technologies appear.

What changes when a museum corrects a historical identification

When a museum discovers an error of this type, the work does not end with simply modifying the name of a piece on display. Many times scientific documents, old records and publications where these remains were mentioned under another classification must also be reviewed.

In paleontologythese types of reviews became increasingly common thanks to the development of genetic analyses, more precise dating, and much larger comparative databases than those available half a century ago.

Why is it disconcerting that whale remains appeared so far from the sea.

That is why several museums maintain programs dedicated exclusively to re-studying materials found decades ago. Some fossils stored for years may still contain completely different information than was believed for generations.
