After an intensive recovery programme in recent days, Luxembourg’s national football team have also analysed their next opponents, Iceland, who played out a 1-1 home draw with Estonia on Saturday. The Red Lions are determined to confirm their promising start to the campaign in front of their supporters at Stade de Luxembourg. However, the squad will be without several key players: Christopher Martins and Seid Korac remain sidelined through injury, and Danel Sinani, who suffered a serious injury on Saturday, has also been ruled out.
At Monday’s pre-match press conference, no new details were provided regarding Sinani’s condition. Both head coach Jeff Strasser and Football Federation official Marc Diederich declined to give a medical update, citing ongoing arrangements. Sinani, who plays for Sampdoria Genoa, is scheduled to undergo surgery abroad and is expected to miss an extended period.
Luxembourg’s record against Iceland
Luxembourg and Iceland have met nine times in the past, with the Red Lions recording four defeats and four draws. Their sole victory came in 2023 during a memorable European Championship qualifying campaign, when goals from Maxime Chanot, Yvandro Borges, and Danel Sinani secured a 3-1 home win. The reverse fixture one month later finished 1-1, with Gerson Rodrigues finding the net for Luxembourg.
The Icelandic squad is currently in a phase of transition, although it still features several well-known names. Notable players include Orri Oskarsson of Real Sociedad and Hakon Arnar Haraldsson from OSC Lille. Several others ply their trade in Germany, such as Isak Johannesson (1. FC Köln), Stefan Teitur Thordarson (Hannover 96), and Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson (Hertha BSC Berlin).
Experienced midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, now aged 37, is another prominent figure in the Iceland squad. He currently plays for Víkingur Reykjavík in the Icelandic top division, but is best known for his time at TSG Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, and at Swansea City, Tottenham, and Everton in the English Premier League.
