The National University of La Plata faces cuts in salaries, research and student programs in a context of growing enrollment and high inflation.
The National University of La Plata is going through a critical scenario resulting from a strong budget adjustment that, according to estimates, implies a real accumulated fall of 45.6% between 2023 and 2026. The impact is already being felt in key areas and is generating concern throughout the educational community of La Plata.
The context becomes even more demanding if one takes into account that the UNLP reached a record of 38 thousand entrants in the 2026 school year. Although there were nominal increases in the items, inflation dilutes those resources and leaves the institution with insufficient funds to sustain its operation. During 2025, even, the budget barely covered 50% of operational needs.
The situation exposes a growing tension between an expanding educational demand and financing that fails to keep up with that growth.
Salaries, research and student well-being, the most affected
The adjustment has a strong impact on three central axes. On the one hand, teaching and non-teaching salaries show a strong deterioration in the face of inflation. On the other hand, scientific research faces cuts that limit the development of projects. Added to this are reductions in student programs, such as scholarships, housing and assistance.
There were also difficulties in the operation of the student ticket, a key tool to guarantee access to education in the city.
Despite the adverse context, UNLP continues to be one of the most important universities in the country. However, the impact of the adjustment already had visible consequences: the institution fell nearly 20 positions in the CWUR 2025 international ranking.
Faced with this panorama, the Superior Council expressed its rejection of the budget reallocations that affect the educational and scientific system. The cut not only impacts university life, but also the dynamics of La Plata, a city deeply affected by its student community.
The evolution of financing will be decisive in sustaining one of the main academic and scientific poles in Argentina and the region.
