A FundPlata report showed strong increases in meat and warned of inflationary pressure on basic consumption.
The latest monthly report of FundPlata Foundation revealed that the food basket in La Plata registered an increase of 3.1% during March 2026, consolidating the pressure of inflation on essential consumption.
The survey, carried out in 18 businesses and based on 26 butcher, grocery and grocery products in 13 neighborhoods of the city, showed disparate behavior between items. Meats led the increases with 6.2%, while warehouse products increased 1.0%. On the other hand, the greengrocery sector registered a drop of -2.8%, which helped moderate the general impact.
Among the foods that increased the most are black potatoes (9.4%), special minced meat (8.8%), loin balls (8.3%) and roast meats (7.3%). According to Belisario Martínez, these increases are well above the average and directly affect the cost of living.
The entity clarified that this basket is not directly comparable with the Consumer Price Index, although it allows anticipating relevant trends in the local economy. In that sense, the increase in La Plata was slightly higher than that registered in Greater Buenos Aires, where it reached 2.9%.
Local inflation, above the national average
The data is known in parallel to the latest report of the INDECwhich marked an inflation of 3.4% in March at the national level, with a year-on-year increase of 32.6% and a cumulative increase of 9.4% in the first quarter of the year.
However, local records show a more intense dynamic. In La Plata, inflation indicators reach levels higher than the national average, with estimates that place the increase at around 5.4%, reflecting a greater impact on consumers’ pockets.
The scenario confirms that the pressure on food continues to be one of the main factors that explain the evolution of prices, in an economic context that continues to be challenging for households.
