The boat is still sailing through the cold waters of the Hinlopen Strait when a murmur begins to prevail over the wind. Just a few minutes later, that rumor transforms into a deafening chorus. In front of the bow emerges a wall of Alkefjellet volcanic rock occupied by hundreds of thousands of birds that turn one of the most inhospitable landscapes on the planet into an incessant celebration of life.
The name means “the mountain of birds” and it is difficult to imagine a more accurate definition. Located on the eastern coast of Spitsbergen, within the Svalbard archipelago, Alkefjellet is home to one of the largest breeding colonies of Brünnich’s guillemot, a species perfectly adapted to the harsh conditions of the High Arctic. Every boreal summer, when the light remains twenty-four hours a day and the ice frees much of the surrounding sea, these birds return to the same place to reproduce.
From the deck, the mountain looks like a gigantic basalt sculpture. The dark columns rise more than one hundred meters almost vertically, drawing geometric shapes that recall the facades of an imaginary city. That monumental appearance is the result of an ancient intrusion of dolerite, an igneous rock that penetrated much older sediments during the late Jurassic or early Cretaceous period. Millions of years of glaciation and erosion ended up revealing these structures that today constitute one of the most impressive geological profiles of Svalbard.
Constant activity takes place on every available ledge. The guillemots land with millimeter precision, exchange turns incubating their single egg, leave in search of food and return with small fish held transversely in their beaks. Everything happens at the same time. Each individual seems to be part of a perfectly synchronized mechanism whose scale exceeds any expectation.
Observing the colony allows us to understand the extent to which evolution perfected surprising strategies. Unlike many other seabirds, murres build very little. They deposit the egg directly on a narrow rocky ledge. Its shape, more pointed at one end, makes it roll in small circles instead of rushing into the void, an extraordinary adaptation for breeding on almost vertical walls.
The show continues far beyond the cliffs. Thousands of birds transfer nutrients from the ocean to land through guano every day. That process, repeated over countless generations, created one of the most fertile swaths of tundra in this Arctic region. Among mosses, lichens and tiny flowers, Svalbard reindeer, arctic foxes and numerous species of geese thrive, finding food in an environment that, seen from afar, would appear completely sterile.
Each element depends on the previous one. The fish feed the birds. Birds enrich the soil. Vegetation supports herbivores. Foxes take advantage of the seasonal abundance of eggs and chicks. Even the polar bear occasionally appears on these slopes during the summer, when the reduction in sea ice temporarily modifies their usual movements. The Arctic here reveals a delicate balance, built on invisible relationships that keep one of the most extreme ecosystems on the planet functioning.
The expeditions travel through the area with extreme caution. Maintaining a safe distance avoids altering the reproductive behavior of the colony and allows you to appreciate the spectacle in its most authentic state. From the boat, the binoculars bring up details that would go unnoticed by the naked eye, while the sound fills the air with an intensity that is difficult to forget.
The experience also challenges many preconceptions about the Arctic. Between glaciers, ice and dark mountains, an extraordinarily dynamic territory emerges. The movement never stops. The wings draw continuous trajectories over the sky, the sea currents transport food, the melting waterfalls descend the rock walls and the light transforms the landscape with each hour of the day, although the sun always remains above the horizon.
Few scenes better express nature’s extraordinary capacity for adaptation. In an environment that seems to defy any form of life, hundreds of thousands of birds return year after year to the same cliff to perpetuate a cycle that has been unfolding for millennia with admirable precision.
When the boat resumes its course and Alkefjellet begins to disappear into the distance, the noise slowly fades away. The mountain regains its solemn, almost silent appearance. There is barely a dark wall silhouetted against the polar sky. However, those who had the opportunity to sail in front of it know that behind that stillness lives one of the most extraordinary manifestations of biodiversity in the Arctic, a place capable of demonstrating that, even at the end of the world, life finds prodigious ways to multiply.
