The works at the Comprehensive Security and Emergency Training Center (Cifse) of the Madrid City Council have «unearthed» the remains of the shell of a large turtle from more than 15 million years ago.
The vice mayor and delegate of Security and Emergencies, Inma Sanz, accompanied by the head of Works and Equipment, Paloma García Romero, has detailed from the Cifse that in the construction work of the new classroom «a circumstance has occurred, like the one that occurred in another of the City Council’s works, in the fire station of the Atalayuela logistics center, where the remains of a mammoth«.
«In this work, a very surprising remains has also appeared, the shell of a turtle more than 15 million years old, from the Miocene,» he reported.
The experts will transfer the remains to the Regional Archaeological Museum, in Alcalá de Henares. Sanz has made no secret that «it is absolutely surprising that a turtle more than 15 million years old has appeared here, and at a very deep depth, at many meters.»
These would be remains of a giant turtle shell identified as Titanochelon bolivari and dated to between the middle and lower Miocene, that is, more than 15 million years old.
