Tim Spector, British doctor: «Most focus on eggs and meat when thinking about protein, but there are many other sources of good quality protein»

The British doctor and epidemiologist Tim Spector has made clear the importance of varying protein sources in order to take care of the intestinal microbiota.

The expert reveals that protein has become one of the fashionable nutrients in recent times, especially in those seeking to take care of their diet or increase their muscle mass.

However, Tim Spector warns that it is not enough to think only about typical foods. «Most focus on eggs and meat when thinking about protein, but there are many other good quality protein sources»he explains.

Furthermore, scientific research published by the Nottingham School of Public Health supports that the strategic combination of foods of plant origin covers all essential amino acids required daily. This finding dismantles the historical belief that only meat provides complete macronutrients.

The expert explained that it is not only enough to achieve a daily protein amount, but to choose foods that also provide other benefits. For this reason, the epidemiologist insists on adding plant-based products rich in protein to the diet, since they include fiber and help take care of the intestinal microbiota.

What foods does Tim Spector recommend to take care of the microbiota and continue adding protein?

Among the foods he recommends Tim Spectorlegumes, mushrooms and whole grains stand out. All of them are a great source of vegetable protein, but they also provide a large amount of fiber, a vital nutrient to feed the microorganisms that live in the intestine.

The English doctor’s insistence on fiber consumption is due to the fact that 90% of us have fiber deficiency», a situation that negatively affects the digestive system. «And if you want to take care of your intestinal microbes, you really need to give them fiber,» concludes Spector.
