Latin America and the Caribbean are preparing to welcome Pope León XIV in November.
It will be the pontiff’s first trip to the continent. An official tour of eleven days that will cover three countries, one of which was his home for more than 20 years, so it is a visit with a special charisma, a spiritual bond that has strengthened over time and influences his way of assuming the papacy.
As part of the preparation for all logistical and pastoral aspects of the apostolic trip, the local Churches of Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru designed unique visual identities that will help to perpetuate this historical event over time. These are logos filled with theological symbolism, history, patriotism, and a sense of community.
Uruguay: Christ is the center
The visit to Uruguay is scheduled from the 6th to the 8th of November, with stops in Montevideo, Paysandú, and Florida. Diego Todeschini as the general art director and Mauro Jara from Grupo Punto were the authors of the official logo.
Graphically, it shows us the pastoral center, which represents the core of the isotype, that is, the drawing or symbol that gives visual identity to this moment without words. There, we observe the Risen Christ, represented through the ferula, the pastoral staff of the Pope which in this instance is associated with a source of joy that is based on the biblical passage from the Gospel of Luke: “I bring you great joy”.
Alongside the figure of Christ, converge Pope Leo XIV and the Virgin of the Thirty-Three, the Patroness of Uruguay; being the central figures of the logo. Then certain graphic elements appear that carry a deep meaning such as the sun and blue stripes that directly evoke the country; visually conveying that message of hope that the Uruguayan people long to feel, with the presence of the Pontiff.
Argentina: A diverse community on the way
After the visit to Uruguay, Leo XIV will be on Argentine soil from the 8th to the 11th of November, including stops in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Luján.
The logo of the visit is part of the official motto “Welcome everyone. Go and announce,” a prayer inspired by the V General Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopate in Aparecida and in the iconic phrase of Francis: “Everyone, Everyone, everyone.”
That is why the design brings together people of multiple shapes, sizes, and tonalities within the same composition, forming a cross in the center, the core of the Christian announcement.
The logo uses the range of sky blue, which visually connects immediately with Argentine identity. Furthermore, the arrangement of the figures projects a collective advance, reflecting that synodal Church that embraces the vulnerable and marginalized sectors as the motto says to “everyone.”
Peru: Tradition, holiness, and openness of the heart
The longest stage of Pope Leo XIV’s journey will take place in Peru, where he will be from November 11 to 16, visiting Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa; under the motto «Let’s open our hearts.»
In this case, the logo created for this event revolves around a heart in which the map of Peru is observed and a white dove that represents the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
A figurative logo whose meaning revolves around love, the center of the noblest feelings, and from there the illusion and welcome that the Peruvian people wish to offer to the Successor of Peter.
In the central part of the heart, the smiling figure of Pope Leo XIV stands out, evoking the figure of the Good Shepherd, the comforter. The graphic integrates the main references of evangelization in Peru.
Saint Rose of Lima, Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo, Saint Martin de Porres, Saint Francis Solano, and Saint Juan Macías, distinguished men and women who consolidate a message of fraternity and ecclesial service whose legacy remains in time, becoming symbols of ecclesial communion and service to the most needy.
Emblems that visually synthesize the pastoral spirit with which Latin America and the Caribbean prepare to receive the Holy Father with a testimony of faith, hope, and continental fraternity.
