An unexpected explosion and dozens of deaths
This Tuesday April 14, the power plant Vedanta Ltd. Chhattisgarh Thermal Power Plant, located in the village of Singhitarai, Chhattisgarh, suffered a burst in one of its boilers.
The plant is managed by Vedanta Ltd, a subsidiary of the eponymous Indian group, owned by the tycoon Anil Agarwal. Vedanta took it over in 2022, after the previous company that owned it went bankrupt.

The first reports after the tragedy showed a balance of 9 dead and some injured. However, unfortunately, these numbers increased as the hours went by.
At the moment, according to what Sakti district police chief Praful Thakur told AFP, they are reported to have died. 19 personas and that another 17 were injured, although these numbers could also rise soon.
It is believed that the explosion occurred due to a fallabut there is still no evidence to prove what really happened.
The company’s response: «We will leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of this matter»
Through its spokesperson, Vedanta referred to the accident. The company communicator spoke of an «unfortunate incident» and confirmed that it «affected subcontractor personnel.» This is because the company employed NGSL workers (Nava Green Energy Systems Limited), an Indian company dedicated to the operation and maintenance of power plants.
«Our focus is on the injured, guaranteeing timely medical care in coordination with medical teams and local authorities,» he added.
After that, he addressed the victims’ families. He reported that «he is firmly at the side of the affected families» and announced the payment of compensation for family members of dead and injured, «along with the continuation of their (the latter’s) salaries until they recover.»
Finally, he explained that the company is collecting information and has initiated a exhaustive investigation in coordination with the relevant authorities.
Who also expressed his words on the matter was Anil Agarwal, president of the business group.
«I am deeply saddened by the tragic accident that occurred at the Singhitarai plant in Chhattisgarh. Every person affected by this disaster is part of my family. Their tears are mine, their pain is my own. In this moment of pain, I am completely at their side. We have all our support and all possible help at their disposal,» he wrote on X.
In the same tweet, the executive confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the incident. «All necessary procedures will be followed to the letter. «We will leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of this matter,» he sentenced.
Industrial accidents are common in India, often due to failure to comply with safety regulations. Last month, a fire at a fireworks factory in the west of the country left 17 dead.
