CUDY, the connectivity brand, detailed why companies with operations in the field, retail or critical infrastructure should consider an industrial router instead of a home or office one. At the same time, the brand presented its new IR02 model, a compact cellular connectivity solution designed specifically for those demanding scenarios.
«A home router is designed for controlled environments: stable temperature, no vibration and no significant electromagnetic interference. When that same equipment is installed inside a vending machine on a public street, next to industrial machinery or in an ATM exposed to the early morning cold, the results are inevitably bad: disconnections, hardware failures and costly maintenance interventions,» he said. Hernán Nicoletto, Sales Manager Latam of CUDY. And he added: «An industrial router, on the other hand, is certified to operate in extreme conditions. It withstands temperature ranges ranging from -40 °C to 75 °C, resists constant vibrations, complies with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations and has redundancy mechanisms that guarantee that the connection is not interrupted even if a telephone operator fails.»
Among the scenarios that demand this type of solution, four major challenges stand out that a conventional router cannot solve: the need for Dual-SIM redundancy to guarantee continuous surveillance and monitoring; operation in extreme cold or heat, such as occurs in vending machines or manufacturing environments; resistance to constant vibration at traffic intersections or moving vehicles; and tolerance to electromagnetic interference typical of industrial environments with motors, frequency converters or RF equipment.
«Companies often underestimate what it means to connect a device in an operational area. An office is not the same as a traffic intersection, a vending refrigerator or a toll on the highway. For those environments there is the industrial router, and that is exactly the segment that our new IR02 model targets,» he stressed. Hernan Nicoletto.
CUDY IR02: the compact industrial router
To respond to the needs of a wide variety of businesses, CUDY designed the IR02, an industrial Wi-Fi router with a compact design – just 104.4 × 103 × 28.3 mm –, designed to be installed inside the cabinet or casing of a machine or equipment that needs connectivity. Its small size does not compromise its robustness: the IR02 complies with EN61373 certification (resistance to shock and vibration), IP30 cabinet protection and Level 3 EMC protection.
In terms of connectivity, the IR02 offers 4G LTE Cat. 4 with up to 150 Mbps download, two nano-SIM slots with automatic switching (failover) between operators, 150 Mbps Wi-Fi and Ethernet ports. Its removable cellular antennas with a magnetic base allow them to be positioned outside the cabinet when the environment shields the signal, thus avoiding frequent problems in installations inside metal machines.
In addition to network connectivity, the IR02 incorporates seven types of industrial interfaces – Ethernet, RS232, DI-Dry, DO-Dry and Wi-Fi – that allow the control and data acquisition needs of a wide variety of devices to be met without the need for additional hardware. This makes it more than just a router, as it can become a complete IoT gateway for monitoring and telemetry applications.
«The IR02 allows us to bring reliable connectivity to scenarios that were previously very difficult to address. Its compact design, its industrial interfaces and its ability to operate with dual SIM make it ideal for any company that needs to connect equipment in the field safely and without interruptions. In addition, we have designed it so that installation is simple even in small spaces,» said CUDY’s Sales Manager Latam.
In terms of security, the IR02 supports the most used VPN protocols in the corporate market –WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPSec, Zerotier, PPTP and L2TP–, along with comprehensive security configurations to protect client data and connected devices against leaks and attacks, without compromising system stability.
Main use cases
The CUDY IR02 is designed to be the heart of connectivity in a wide range of distributed industrial and commercial scenarios. Among them: vending machines, automated teller machines (ATM), chain stores, franchises, highway tolls, logistics equipment, smart city, manufacturing, transportation.
“We are a brand with a clear vision about the future of connectivity in the region,” he said. Hernan Nicolettowho concluded: «The IR02 is CUDY’s answer for those companies that need to connect critical equipment with the same reliability that they would expect from a corporate network infrastructure, but in a compact, robust and accessible form factor. We are convinced that this type of solutions will be increasingly relevant as the deployment of industrial IoT and connected retail grows in the country.»
