Caring for a person is much more than treating an illness. As an intensivist doctor, I learned that science, presence, love and spirituality can coexist throughout the entire process, offering a more human and comprehensive view of care.
For years I practiced medicine in intensive care and emergencies convinced that my greatest responsibility was to indicate the best treatment for each patient. And it still is. But over time I understood that there was something that no protocol described: the power of presence .

The disease does not only affect the body
I discovered that, in addition to medications, ventilators, and procedures, there was another way to care. The disease does not only affect the body; It also reaches emotions, connections and the way in which a person understands their own life.
Next to the patient there is always a family that suffers in silence. I heard the same phrase countless times: “Doctor, I feel like I can’t do anything.” . And I always thought the same thing: yes they can .
I have seen patients relax when hearing a child’s voice, respond to a caress, or smile when remembering a happy moment . For moments they stopped being a disease and began to feel like people again. And that difference is immense.
The path of inner growth
Over the years I understood that, to sustain so much pain, I also needed to learn to sustain myself. I began a deep path of inner growth that transformed my way of practicing medicine.
I discovered that a professional not only transmits knowledge; also transmits calm, hope and confidence . It was then when I understood that my vocation was not only to treat diseases, but also to accompany the human being who went through them.
On that path I discovered that I was never alone. I learned to recognize the presence of angels and consciously walk alongside them. Today they are part of my life and the way I accompany each patient. I silently ask that your light surround that space, support the patient, strengthen his family and also the health team, and that you allow me to be an instrument of peace and love in that encounter.
Science and spirituality: two paths that coexist
I don’t expect everyone to understand this experience or share my beliefs. I share it because it is part of who I am. Just as I have been preparing for years to take care of the body through medicine, I have also dedicated my life to cultivating my spiritual world. Both paths coexist in me every time I accompany a person.
Science taught me to take care of my body. Spirituality taught me to take care of the presence with which I accompany. Today I believe that both can coexist with respect, because when medical excellence meets a deep humanity care becomes truly comprehensive.
