The Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (the LSAP), has launched a new campaign to obtain a better idea of citizens’ true opinions. The opposition party say the campaign is not just about listening, but about implementing the public’s proposals into politics.

The LSAP says that trust in politics is being eroded, as evidenced by the most recent POLINDEX survey last year. Party co-chair Georges Engel explains:

«Two-thirds, or 67% of Luxembourg citizens believe that political decision-makers pay little or no attention to what people think. Among our population without Luxembourg citizenship, this figure reaches 71%.»

The distrust is particularly high among young people, with only 26% saying that politics gives them hope. One consequence of this distance is that far-right parties are gaining popularity all over the world.

Politicians must admit they live in a bubble, says party co-chair Maxime Miltgen:

«When we deal with politics every day, read dossiers, discuss in working groups, lead debates in the Chamber or in the party, over time we also look at various issues through political glasses. This is very normal, but it is precisely for this reason that it is important to constantly be aware that there are many other ways to look at things.»

In order to obtain a clearer impression of how people who are not necessarily politically active or even interested in politics view various issues, the LSAP is organising a campaign over two days to discuss housing, work, health, and the environment. Secretary General Sascha Pulli explains what kind of participants they are hoping for:

«We’re looking at a group of around 60 people, made up of 23 non-members, 23 members, 7 MPs and 7 leadership representatives.»

The participants will be chosen by lottery, but care would be taken to ensure that the widest possible range of different age groups, professions, genders, educational levels and nationalities will be represented. The aim is to retain 10 recommendations per topic, adding up to a total of 40, which will later serve as input when drafting the LSAP manifesto for the 2028 parliamentary elections. In the end, as always, a congress would have the final say on the election manifesto.
