The survey carried out in businesses in different neighborhoods of the city detected increases in warehouses, greengrocers and butcher shops. The interannual variation of food reached 32.1%.
The food basket in La Plata registered an increase again during May. According to a report prepared by the FundPlata Foundationbasic products increased by 2.1% during the last month surveyed, in a context where households continue to face the impact of increases in food.
The study was carried out by monitoring 26 warehouse, butcher and greengrocer products in 18 retail stores located in 13 neighborhoods of the city. The survey was carried out during the fourth week of May.
Within the items analyzed, the largest monthly increase corresponded to warehouse products, with an increase of 3%. In second place were greengrocers, which increased by 2.4%, while butchers showed a variation of 1.5%.
The foods that increased the most
From FundPlata they indicated that some products registered year-on-year increases much higher than the general average of the food basket.
Among the most notable cases is the roast, which accumulated an increase of 70.5% during the last twelve months. Sunflower oil, with a variation of 59.6%, and minced meat, which reached an increase of 55.1%, were also among the highest increases.
According to the report, the evolution of food prices in La Plata between June 2025 and May 2026 showed a cumulative increase of 32.1%.
In the regional comparison, the survey indicated that the food basket of Greater Buenos Aires had an increase of 2.8% during May, above the 2.1% registered in the capital of Buenos Aires.
The study concluded that, despite the monthly increase, the variation in food in La Plata was below that recorded in other suburban districts.
